Key to Unpatterned Snakes with Unkeeled Scales

Choose the description that best fits the snake of interest.

A. Small snake (less than 75 cm), neck ring of yellow, cream or
orange, back varies from gray, brown to black, belly bright yellow, 
orange or red, 15-17 scale rows, Ontario to Nova Scotia.
           
           Diadophis punctatus (Ringneck Snake)



B. Large snake (grows to almost 2 m), extremely variable across
Canada, in Ontario pale blue to bluish-green with white or 
bluish-white belly, in Saskatchewan bluish-green, green, gray or 
brown with belly cream to bright yellow, in British Columbia 
green, yellow or reddish-brown with yellow belly, 17 scale rows, 
found in BC, Saskatchewan and Ontario.
           
           Coluber constrictor (Racer)


   
C. Small snake (less than 70 cm), bright green, belly white and
tinged with yellow, 15 scale rows, Saskatchewan to Nova Scotia.
           
           Opheodrys vernalis (Smooth Green Snake)
     

D. Small snake (less than 50 cm long), back brown or yellowish or
reddish brown, belly has alternating black and whitish crossbars, 
15 scale rows, southern British Columbia only.
             
             Contia tenuis (Sharp-tailed Snake)
