Key to Blotched Snakes with Upturned Snouts

Choose the snake that best fits the description.
If neither matches go back to the Key to the Colubrids.

  
A.  Medium-sized snake (less than 90 cm), sharply upturned snout, 
belly and underside of tail distinctly patterned with large black 
blotches, scales keeled and in 23 rows, Manitoba to Saskatchewan.
             
             Heterodon nasicus  (Western Hognose Snake)



B. Large snake (grows to over 1 m), slightly upturned snout, extremely
variable in colour, some individuals will be all black, underside of 
tail much lighter than belly, scales keeled and in 23-25 rows, southern 
Ontario only.
             
             Heterodon platirhinos (Eastern Hognose Snake)
